I’m MutyaRN, I’m writing to the President.

Dear Pres. Aquino,

I congratulate you for killing  the “ act providing for a Comprehensive Nursing Law towards Quality Healthcare System and Appropriating Funds Therefor”. This signifies your compassion, love  and understanding to us—nurses.

Being the outgoing President of the Philippines, I will give all my respect to you, His Excellency. Your administration is always proclaiming that you successfully improved the conditions of our public healthcare institutions in our poor country, in support, the Department of Health also boastfully said that we are very near to achieving the goal of universal healthcare, yet, ironically,  8 out of 10 Filipinos die without seeing a single healthcare professional, that includes not seeing us— nurses.

I will not ask you to override your decision or to explain yourself; I want to give you a glimpse of our life which you belittled and disregarded. It is better than convincing your already close mind.

Mr President, this is not only about the salary grade that we are fighting for, this is about the work dignity that the nurses only deserve. We don’t ask for too much, we only beg for the exact, livable amount. We are not corrupt, we care, we love, we understand and we only deserve it.

Early in the morning when no one is around, we take care of 30-40 patients in one hospital ward; your administration permitted your hospitals to hire 2-3 staff nurses/ward. Mathematically, one nurse is for 10 patients. We don’t only look at our patients, we cannot afford to sit, to wait for the bell to ring, eat our breakfast, lunch, snacks or dinner. Infact Mr. President, while you are taking your break,  we assess, diagnose, set outcome criteria, plan, intervene and evaluate.

We are not low lying animals, we are human beings.

We administer high alert medications. We see to it that we give the correct drug with right dose and observing another kilometer of rights. If we are cruel enough, if we are idle, if we are corrupt, if we are stupid, we can easily administer these drugs and watch your voters die.

We don’t get enough sleep, we have straight duties, we need to comply and compensate because most of your hospitals are understaffed. We report despite there is a typhoon, an earthquake, even in special occasions, we care for your voters. While others are having their vacation, while you are having your siesta time, we are selflessly present at the patients’s bedside.

Don’t lecture us about training and seminars because, I tell you Mr. President, it’s useless. We are paying for private training because the free seminars and training that you are very proud of, are as old as the Malacanan palace. If we want to learn more, to improve our competency, You give us no choice but to seek, to train and sadly, to pay using our own meager salary because when we will not do this, we will remain empty in your empty healthcare institutions. Supposedly, you are the one ensuring the implementation of these training. Your advisers did not do their research right?

Now, when your voters poop and urinate on their bed, we wipe it and make them clean. Our hands are dirty because you gave us no choice but to recycle our gloves.  We don’t have mask in the hospital, to protect ourselves; we buy using our own salary. Providing workplace safety, as far as I know, is your responsibility. No amount of money can pay to suffice the hazards that we are facing every day.

Lastly, you don’t ever compare us to other professions. We are your health allies. We are the lifeblood of the healthcare industry. When we leave the bedside, many will die, and you will not like it. We don’t leave our posts just to attend rallies in the street. In fact, we are not only nurses, we are also teachers, because health education is one of our many core competency.  Our teachings can save a life.

We are also pharmacist, we don’t only administer drugs, we check it, and we protect your voters from medication error. We don’t simply follow orders, like you, we discern, we investigate if this is safe and beneficial for your voters.  Unlike you, we fight for what is right and just.

No job is small or big. Every job is unique. There is simple a reason why nurses receive high salary outside of this country. It is no brainier Mr. President. It is common sense that other countries, sane and compassionate countries, acknowledge the kind of work that we do. Only in this country that we are treated as animals, not to mention, some doctors who verbally torture nurses in the clinical area.

With due all respect Mr President, you are under an illusion and a delusion that this country has a strong health workforce. In Psychiatric nursing, we confront you with reality, that’s why I’m writing this for you to see the bitter realities of the nursing industry in our country. If you are still in doubt, try to have yourself admitted in a public hospital, and you will see how cruel your government to nurses is.

Earlier when I read the news that you vetoed the bill, I cried because of disbelief. In fact, I am a supporter of your yellow army. I supported you, but that support and admiration ends today, like how you vetoed our life, the CNL.

Nurses are trained to become caring, understanding and enduring. We always listen; we never judge or give advice to influence a decision. However, I can’t be a nurse with this.

Tonight, I am speaking not as a nurse but as a human being. This is more than business Mr. President. At the end, you will know that the last man or woman standing beside your bed is a nurse and not your (kumpare and companeros,) the {nurse}  will insert your intravenous catheter, she will tuck your bed, she will wipe your poop, she will give your medications, will clean your wounds, will provide you food, will fight for your rights, will protect you from falls and accidents, even you failed them.

Mr. President, I want to close this letter by saying; you have no heart . You have no soul.

      1. Mutya, health is business in the Philippines .

We, the nurses will ensure that we will continue our duties not because we are obliged to but because we care… even how hurt and humiliated we are because of what he did,, not because most of our brother and sister nurses don’t receive proper compensation but because he have proven us that he don’t care about nurses thus he don’t care about the Filipino people as well.

    3. Obviously there is no point appealing to his sympathies because he is indifferent. It is useless to expect some sense from him because he doesn’t have any. This idiot is an incompetent, indifferent, nepotistic fool whose campaign was premised on the people’s grief, backed only by his own delusions of grandeur. His entire presidency was spent putting others down so he can be lifted and his ineptness masked, actively and successfully marginilizing his own countrymen for the benefit of his minions, and leaving Malacanang still having the energy to claim that he has a great legacy and somehow fooling people into thinking that he is the “best president” we have had. I believed then as I believe now, he did not deserve the highest position in the land. I sympathize with everyone in the healthcare sector who has been systematically and constantly marginalized for years now. May you all one day get the respect that you all truly deserve.

    4. Even if you don’t agree, it is unfair to give an entry level of salary grade 15 to government nurses while there are private nurses who still receive less than P10,000.00 monthly salary. The entry level of teachers is still salary grade 11 which is why my daughter who is already a PhD holder is still in salary 11 level. The entry level of Accountants and Engineers is only salary grade 12 I think Abnoy made a correct decision this time

We care for every patient even those not assigned for us. We give a helping hand to those that need us. As sad as it may seem, when we Nurses need something even just a little compensation for all the risks and hazards that we face our a**hole president turned us down.

I envy most people in government offices who spend time on their desk, day in and day out and still got paid with rewarding salary and bonuses from not so rewarding job performance.
By the way, good job. Our years of sentiments were all covered in one great article.

I never thought that he will not realize that from the moment his sister gave birth upto the moment her mother died… nurses were there ( not just doctors)…

From the moment he will get sick from the moment he leaves the hospital well and about… nurses will be there beside him… even if we got hurt by his inconsiderate decision…

I am really disappointed… in recent nursing exam… only 6000 were lucky… from the thousands nearing 100000 from my batch… only 6000 became registered…

Nursing is really dying in this country…

    My really got crushed…

Im praying that someone will fight for us… i wanna fight… i wanna make a legacy for this generation… but i cant do it alone…

Nurses have to unite and fight for whats due of us…

That is indeed correct, the soon to be former President doesn’t know how distrubute the means to develop each aspect of the society that lacks priority; the ones that have been prioritized and have been focused before are still the targets for improvement; hence, this situation only made us realized that our chosen leader wasn’t knowledgeable enough of the current situations revolving around the country; and we were just blinded with the good deeds of his parents that has been reminisced by the filipinos. We were just caught and allured by the good talks and advocacies that in the end had no results.

So what do you expect the care na maibibigay ng nurses if 1:30 ratio in a general ward. How you follow them around carrying charts of their patients. Sad to say that our very own President doesn’t appreciate the work that we do and what kind of people we are. He has forgotten that we took 4 years in College just to earn our BSN. That’s the reason why some of us has left our country to be treated and compensated right. People of other nationalities appreciate Filipino nurses. They know how caring and knowledgeable we are. That we deserve to be treated right. I truly wish that nurses in the Philippines should get the repect and compensation they deserve.

I can relate very much sa part na bibili ng sariling mask etc. Naka care off yun sa name ko sa aming coop botika, because ang hospital pharmacy and csr mismo ay wala sila. So by the end of the month kapag babayadan ko na, aabot sya ng 2 to 3k [40p sa tape, 75p sa h2o, 5p sa mask ( yes ganun kamahal)], hindi pa kasama yyng iba gamot na care off sa akin kasi may mga “super” indigent patients na wala talaga pambili. But now, after my surgery, e di syempre hindi na ako makapag care off kasi need ng money pambayad ng inutang para sa surgery. Long story short, hindi lang talaga kulang staffs, pati mga stocks and equipments. Yung nasa letter mo na may improvement sa hospitals natin, i raise my fist for objection.

This news saddens me because NURSES (like TEACHERS) are the most underprivileged/underpaid professionals here in our damn country.

I have nothing against “artistas” but the masses pay exorbitant movies fees to see their favorite stars (like His Excellency’s famous sister) while the Nurses of the Philippines must leave their families and loved ones behind just to earned big to send money back to their relatives and our country. The least you could do, Sir, is to sign that bill to make life for our nurses a little easier.

It’s disheartening to know that our society sees nurses only as a follower of doctors orders. Only in the Philippines that nurses are downgraded and always just a class B profession. 35. Truly heart breaking. While I was reading, I recall my experience as a volunteer nurse in our local general hospital. I have experienced how it is to become the lone nurse, since most of the colleagues have called in sick at that time, who would care for all the patients in the entire ward (50 ang bed capacity nun). I have experienced being threatened by an angry patient without any reason at all. I have experienced little sleep in between shifts. I felt like I was being used by the health system. With no pay at all, I felt I was useless and in capable of helping my family who is going through a crisis.

I also worked as a private nurse para may sahod kahit papaano. On call ako. More than 8 hours ang trabaho. So I snapped. I decided to quit.

I love being a nurse. I love hearing my clients say thank you, and showing little gestures of appreciation. I miss those times. But I felt that with the current system, I cannot be a nurse unless magaabroad ako. I was deeply frustrated. I felt exploited. This was 6 years ago. At hanggang ngayon, ganun parin ang problema. Sana nga sa bagong administrasyon may pagbabago.
